Buyer Beware

My academic interest was in white Shamans, that is non-Indians who have studied native ways. These ‘boundary crossers’ were the subject of my doctorate.

If you are interested in this kind of shamanic experience for yourself please take care when choosing your Shamanic guides, there is no ‘guild of Shamans’ and no awarding body, no protective organisation to sue if something goes wrong.

Shamanism is a talent like music is a talent. There is no relationship whatsoever between shamanic ability and ‘ethics’ or ‘spirituality’, or at least not spirituality as you may know it.

If you are looking for a teacher there are good guys out there and some really evil abusive mothers (believe it). You may go off in search of ‘Don Juan’ but you can end up with ‘Charles Manson’.

Here are five people who I can recommend both for their abilities and their integrity.

Nick Noblewolf & Annie Dreamwalker.

I spent six months searching for someone to work with and then I found Nick. –

Nick is a quiet sincere man with a good sense of humour.

Nick and Annie run retreats in the deserts of Utah and in the Rocky Mountains Nick really has a lot of knowledge and a safe way of teaching. I recommend a desert trip because Nick is an expert on creating a Shamanic relationship with the stars. That may not make much sense to someone in the UK. After all look up at the stars and all you see is cloud, but in the high desert it’s a different matter, and with Nick’s teaching you will be in awe of what you can learn,

Nick was literally a Godsend to me because he is so sensible, hospitable, knowledgeable and able to facilitate a deep experience in others. Annie is a real sweetheart, a great cook a terrific organiser (you need good organisation for these trips) and when it comes to Shamanic ways, she’s no slouch – check their website

Martin Pretchel

Martin is a terrific writer, lecturer artist and musician. Martin visits the UK about once a year and normally does group work, he has worked for years with the poet Robert Bly on men’s groups.

Anything that Martin does is interesting, he’s a showman but he really knows his stuff and it’s a great show. Check out Martin’s website or even buy one of his books then if you do see him, ask him to autograph the books, because he does these wonderful little drawings.

Pip Bondy

Pip lives in West Wales - give or take a few country miles, she is a neighbour of mine.

Pip organises vision quests for women. Her groups attract women from all walks of life and from all over the world. Pip uses shamanistic techniques in a western context of change and empowerment - she is brilliantly organised and frighteningly acute.

Rabbi Gershon Winkler

My friend Martin turned me on to the good rabbi. Now, I have never worked with the Winkler but I would like to. His website is funny and radically wonderful and so is his newsletter. For the full flavour of Judaic Shamanism check out the Rabbi’s site –
